Pre-colonial Igbo societies of East Nigeria hated twin children. Abhorred as abominations and curses from the gods, twins were killed off immediately after birth.
I’ve often pondered the could-have-beens had these kids
been allowed to live, thrive, and populate Igboland. Children who could've impacted positively on the Igbo nation were wasted on grounds of religious fervor. We have killed off a chunk of our own future so whatever we enjoy from our progeny is just part of our initial blessing.
This piece depicts the simple joys inherent in parenting twin children…a joy our precolonial forefathers missed out on.
